The steelworks at Templeborough outside Rotherham was developed in 1917 Producing shell casings during the first world war. During the 1950's there was a large scale modernization of the plant with the Introduction of Electric- Arc Furnaces in the melting shop.
At Its peak the Templeborough works employed 10,000 men In the Rod mill, Melting shop, Cogging Mill and Finishing Banks. Changing economic fortunes left the plant lacking the modern investment needed to make the plant economical. The Melting shop shut down in 1993 with the other parts of the site working on to the late 90's.
The melting shop has been converted to become the Magna Science and Technology Museum by the local council which retains the Melting shop buildings in one of the better museum projects to come out of the millennium regeneration scheme.
