Originally Established in 1918 under the name of the Royal Aircraft establishment Pyestock to research and develop future aircraft. In 1936 Sir frank whittle established Power Jets Ltd on adjacent land to develop Gas turbine (Jet engine technology) Throughout the second world war Development continued establishing the Pyestock site as a leader in gas turbine technology.

In 1946 the Site was nationalised and in the following years played a key role In the development of jet engine technology, Most notably in the development of Concorde which was to become the worlds first supersonic Airliner.

In the 1990's the site became the Defense Research Agency, conducting research into technology beyond that of aviation. In 2002 many parts of the site closed when the government privatised the agency creating a company known as QuintiQ. The NGTE is set to be knocked down to build a Tesco distribution center.
