Since we first visited this place in 2005 this has become one of our most visited locations. Its size scale, features and its complete nature make it a rare example of a derelict heavy industrial complex.
Coking production began on site in the 19th century with coal being sourced from the neighboring CWM colliery. In the 1950s the plant was extensively rebuilt constructing new battery's and building a modern byproduct recovery plant.
With the privatization of the coal industry the site passed into the control of CPL Industry's who operated the site until 2002 when the site was closed. Leaving Monckton Coke works as the last independent coke works in the country.
